Protocol, 10054 and black screen: what to fix first

Protocol version is different, error 10054, black screen: causes and player fixes. Right C6 client, this server's patch, folder outside Program Files on L2 Sansara.

Protocol version is different is the most honest sentence the Interlude client still prints: you are not speaking the server’s language. On L2 Sansara that language is Interlude. Error 10054, a black screen, an l2 critical error at l2.exe, and a lineage 2 disconnect after the password box are different folders. This page sorts them — not a registry cookbook, not a download walkthrough, not a hardware sheet.

The Interlude pack is on /download. Which file: download Lineage 2 Interlude. How the zip lands in System: how to install the patch. Latency that is not a login error: ping and timezone. DirectX and laptop specs: Windows requirements. Stay here when the exe already exists and something refuses.

Protocol version is different: chronicle, not “server down”

Protocol version is different almost never means the host is offline. It means the client is not sending the chronicle this login expects. L2 Sansara is Interlude C6: cap 80, five races, no Kamael, no Awakening, no dual class. A High Five System, a Gracia pack, Steam Essence, Steam Classic, or a “C6” folder that still holds last year’s l2.ini fails the same way. The window looks identical. The cause is not.

A clean tell at character create: if the race list offers Kamael — Inspector, Soul Breaker, anything winged — stop. That executable is not this Aden. Do not “try the patch on top anyway.” Pull a clean Interlude client from /download and apply L2 Sansara’s patch into that System.

Do not open l2.ini and change a protocol revision from a 2014 forum. That does not fool the gameserver; it leaves a client that later dies as 10054 or a kick at character select. The patch writes the address this realm needs. A Discord paste of someone else’s ini is how you inherit a dead IP. Install order: the patch article. Two patches plus a “widescreen System” do not average into Interlude. Rebuild System from this server’s current zip.

Lineage 2 won't start and l2 critical error

When lineage 2 won't start, or you get an l2 critical error the instant you double-click l2.exe, the process never reaches the login box. That is not protocol — protocol needs a handshake. This is the exe dying on the desktop: a flash, a Windows “has stopped working,” or nothing.

Put the client outside Program Files — a path you own, such as C:\Games\L2. Windows 10/11 UAC will not let a 2007 binary write option.ini or accept a patch under those trees. Exclude the whole game folder in antivirus, not only the exe. Launch this l2.exe, as administrator if the OS blocks the write. On Windows 11, Windows 7 compatibility is a lever if the exe still refuses — not a ritual if it already opens.

Interlude is a 32-bit client on 64-bit Windows. That is normal. There is no “Steam L2 x64” for this realm — Steam’s button is Essence or Classic and never reads this l2.ini. An overlay on a 2007 process (Discord, GeForce, Afterburner) is a classic boot crash that looks like a dead GPU. Close it. If the icon is fine and the process still dies, skip to Engine.dll. Reinstall the C6 client from /download first, not Windows. Rates on /info — EXP/SP/Adena x500, drop x1, enchant +4 / +18 — do not start an executable.

The shortcut that opens yesterday's System

The desktop icon is not the game. It is a .lnk with a Target and a Start in path. If you ever installed another Interlude — a 2019 private, a “backup” High Five — Windows still opens that older folder. The icon says Lineage 2, a login box appears, and L2 Sansara never lets you in. Or it opens a System that never received the zip from /download, and you swear the patch “did nothing.” Right-click → Properties: Target and Start in must end in the System where you extracted L2 Sansara’s patch. Two client trees? The leftover .lnk almost always points at the old one. Delete it. Make a new shortcut from the patched l2.exe. Do not use the NCSoft launcher, Steam, or another private’s updater.

Engine.dll missing: the antivirus ate the client

Engine.dll is Interlude’s Unreal Engine 2.5 binary. Without it, l2.exe does not start: “DLL was not found,” a dry crash, or nothing. The desktop shortcut still looks healthy, because a shortcut is not the DLL. That is why lineage 2 won't start the morning after a scan.

Defender, Avast, Kaspersky, and a lot of “gaming” suites treat a 2007 unsigned binary — and the patch that overwrites System — as a hack tool. They quarantine Engine.dll, l2.exe, or both. The fix is not a new Windows image:

  1. Protection history / quarantine: restore anything named Lineage 2, l2.exe, or Engine.dll.
  2. Exclude the entire game folder before you patch again. Excluding only the exe is how the DLL vanishes overnight a second time.
  3. If the file is still missing, re-extract the clean client and L2 Sansara’s patch from /download over System.

Skip the exclusion and the same scan eats the same files tonight. That is not protocol — it is a file that is no longer on disk.

Black screen and error setting display mode

L2 black screen and error setting display mode are one problem with two faces: the client asked for a video mode the monitor will not take. Interlude shipped 4:3 at 60 or 75 Hz. A 16:9 laptop at 144 Hz, exclusive fullscreen, is the default path to a black rectangle and a return to the desktop.

The file is System\option.ini (sometimes Option.ini). Close the client. Open it in Notepad. You want the display lines, not l2.ini. Same folder, different jobs: one is video, one is login. Mixing them is how people “fix” a black screen by breaking protocol. Three levers actually move a C6 client:

  • IsWindowMode=True — windowed. If the process will not stay up, this is the first switch.
  • A safe resolution — 1024x768 to get a login, then 1280×720 from the video menu once you are in. Chasing 1920×1080 on day one is how the error comes back.
  • RefreshRate=60 — leave 120 and 144 alone until the login box is stable.

If those keys are missing or the file is empty, delete option.ini and let the client rebuild one. Do not paste a High Five option file or a “HD interface” ini. GPU talk belongs on the requirements page.

When option.ini will not save

You edit the file, save, open the game, and nothing changed — or the patch “did not overwrite” System. That is usually UAC, not a bad refresh rate. Under Program Files, Windows 10/11 will not let a 2007 exe write there. Sometimes it redirects the write to AppData\Local\VirtualStore with no warning. You stare at the option.ini in Program Files; the client reads VirtualStore. Both files lie. Move the client to a folder you own, re-apply the patch from /download, then touch IsWindowMode. If the ini will not persist, the problem is the folder permission — not “run as administrator forever.”

L2 widescreen crash, DPI, and overlays

An l2 widescreen crash after someone “optimized” option.ini for 21:9, or after a “System widescreen” zip, is the same movie as the black screen: a mode the 2007 device will not take. Forced 16:9 packs overwrite System files that are not video. The next login is protocol version is different. The pack broke the handshake. Windowed plus a modest resolution is the answer here. A texture zip is not.

Windows 10/11 DPI at 125% or 150% stretches a 2007 window until the client refuses the display. On l2.exe: Properties → Compatibility → override high DPI scaling, or set the exe to 100% while you test. We do not publish registry values for that. Overlays fail twice: at boot they look like an l2 critical error; after login they look like an l2 black screen on Alt+Tab. Discord, GeForce Experience, Xbox Game Bar, Afterburner. Exclusive fullscreen on Windows 11 loses the DirectX device when you change desktops; windowed survives. Close the overlay and stay windowed until login is boring.

Error 10054 and lineage 2 disconnect

Error 10054 lineage 2 is a TCP reset: the far side closed the connection (WSAECONNRESET). In the client it prints as error 10054, lineage 2 disconnect, “connection lost,” or a login that throws you back to the password box. It is not a ping. We do not publish a millisecond that “eliminates 10054,” and we do not publish ports or IPs here. The patch writes the address. A number from Discord is how you point at a dead host and then blame the server.

Split the symptom:

  1. Confirm L2 Sansara is up — the site, Discord, /info. If the host is down, 10054 is noise.
  2. If you always drop at the login box: foreign l2.ini, incomplete System, or a hosts leftover. Re-apply the zip from /download on a clean Interlude. Steam Essence will never complete this handshake.
  3. Windows Firewall: allow l2.exe on private and public. A “gaming” antivirus can reset the socket and call it disconnect.
  4. If you only drop in a full Giran at prime, or a nuke feels late in Olympiad, you left this article. That is latency. Measure it on the ping page. GMT-3 and Olympiad 18:00–22:00 do not repair a wrong protocol.

A VPN can help a bad ISP route or look like 10054 if the exit is blocked. Treat it as a test you turn off again. A chat string in Aden does not hold a TCP session closed before you loaded the world.

Login accepted, then kicked at character select

The password worked. You see the character list, you click Enter, and the client dumps you. That does not prove the account is wrong, and it does not prove the x500 rate is “broken.” The loginserver already believed you. The cut is the gameserver handshake: protocol mismatch, a patch that only half-landed, or a System borrowed from another chronicle. Rates on /info do not handshake. Re-apply the patch inside System and open that folder’s l2.exe. No account? Some clients phrase a refused login like protocol — register on /register first. Playing is free. A disconnect on a character that already exists is not fixed by registering again; login-length rules at create are on the account and patch page.

Hosts leftovers from another private

The Windows hosts file is a local name-to-IP map. Older privates asked players to add a line so the login name resolved their way. Those lines survive. Symptom: Lineage 2 never connects, error 10054 at the box, or a login that spins forever — even when L2 Sansara’s l2.ini is correct. Hosts answered with a corpse.

The file is C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts (open as administrator). Delete entries you did not ask this server for — other L2 names, dead IPs, leftover l2authd rows from a 2012 guide. Do not add “just in case” lines or a twenty-name “all L2” blocklist. If L2 Sansara’s current /download note does not tell you to touch hosts, the only legitimate edit is cleanup. Then ipconfig /flushdns. That does not replace the patch. It only stops an old private from hijacking the name.

Forum "fixes" this page will not publish

A thread from 2012 will ask for three things that break more clients in 2026 than they save. We will not walk them.

  • Registry. Windows 7 compatibility on the l2.exe properties tab is enough. We do not publish “L2 XP compatibility” keys, AppId edits, or anything that opens Regedit. Those keys do not write a patch.
  • Universal hosts lists. A block of twenty names is not L2 Sansara’s patch. It points login at a dead address and makes 10054 look like “the server.”
  • Visual packs, HD interfaces, “widescreen System.” They overwrite System and mix chronicle files. The next screen is protocol version is different. Windowed plus 1024×768 @ 60 is this hub’s video fix. A texture archive is not.

If a video says “copy this System and you enter every Interlude,” close it. Playing on L2 Sansara is free. Donate exists. Neither replaces the zip on /download. We do not invent .repair, .unstuck, or .shop. If a command is not on /info, it is not a fact here. In-world chat strings are player commands — they do not start l2.exe.

Stuck in the mesh is not an exe crash

Wedged in a wall, under a catacomb floor, or in a tower gap is world geodata. The process is still running. You can see Aden. You cannot walk. That is not an l2 critical error, not a black screen, and not error 10054. option.ini and Engine.dll will not lift you. /info does not list .unstuck or .repair — we do not invent them. Relog, a staff ticket, whatever the live sheet names. Do not file a stuck character as “Lineage 2 won't start.”

What to try, in order — no registry

Three errors, three folders. Protocol is chronicle and client. Black screen is option.ini, resolution, DPI, overlay. 10054 is network, firewall, l2.ini, hosts. Do not mix them in one ticket. Do not reinstall Windows on the first crash.

  1. Interlude client from /download, extracted outside Program Files. Pack itself: the download article.
  2. L2 Sansara’s patch inside System — this private’s l2.ini, not a 2014 souvenir. Copy order: the patch article.
  3. Account on /register. Caps Lock has closed more “server down” nights than any handshake.
  4. Exclude the whole folder in antivirus. Restore Engine.dll if it vanished. Close overlays.
  5. Windowed, 1024×768 or 1280×720, 60 Hz, 100% DPI. Windows 7 compatibility if Windows 11 refuses the exe.
  6. Hosts: delete leftovers. Do not invent a twenty-line map. Flush DNS.
  7. Open this l2.exe. Not Steam. Not last year’s shortcut.

If the game opens and the only remaining complaint is a delayed nuke in Olympiad, you left this article and entered ping. Rates and enchant +4 / +18 do not repair display mode. Olympiad 18:00–22:00 GMT-3 does not fix overlay. Get the right client, register, and keep the sheet for rates — not for GPU drivers.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What does protocol version is different mean?
The client and the login are not the same chronicle. On L2 Sansara that is Interlude C6. High Five, Gracia, Steam Essence, and Steam Classic all fail this handshake. It is not a “server offline” banner.
Lineage 2 won't start on Windows 11. What are the first three checks?
Folder outside Program Files; Defender (or Avast, Kaspersky) did not quarantine Engine.dll or l2.exe; you launch this client's l2.exe — not a 2019 shortcut and not Steam. Windows 7 compatibility is next if the exe still refuses.
Is error 10054 a ping number?
No. Error 10054 is a TCP reset: the other side closed the socket. It is not a published millisecond. Drop only in a packed Giran? Measure latency. Always at the login box? Patch, l2.ini, or hosts — not the Ethernet cable.
Is a black screen a dead GPU?
Usually not. An l2 black screen or “error setting display mode” is the 2007 client asking for a fullscreen mode the monitor will not take. Windowed plus 1024×768 at 60 Hz fixes most of it. Overlay (Discord, GeForce) is the other classic.
I get a lineage 2 disconnect after the patch. Do I reinstall Windows?
No. A disconnect after the patch is almost always another private's l2.ini in System, or antivirus eating the files you just copied. Rebuild L2 Sansara's patch from /download. Reinstalling Windows is the last paragraph of a bad tutorial.
Can widescreen and DPI break the client?
Yes. An l2 widescreen crash, a black screen after someone “optimized” option.ini, and Windows 10/11 scaling at 125% or 150% are the same family. Force a window, a low resolution, and 100% DPI on the exe. No registry edits.
Do I have to edit the Windows hosts file to enter L2 Sansara?
Only if the current /download note on L2 Sansara asks for it. The usual job is the opposite: delete leftover lines from another private. Those leftovers send the login to a dead IP and look like error 10054 lineage 2.
Does .repair fix error 10054?
No. Error 10054 happens before you are in the world. /info does not list .repair. On other privates that string is a chat command for a character already inside — not for l2.exe or a TCP socket. We do not invent it.
Why did Engine.dll disappear overnight?
Defender and most “gaming” antivirus products quarantine the 2007 Unreal binary. The desktop icon stays; the DLL does not. Restore it from Protection history, exclude the whole game folder, then re-extract the patch if the file is still gone.
Login accepted my password, then kicked me at character select. Is the account bad?
The loginserver believed you. The cut is the gameserver handshake: incomplete patch, High Five System, or someone else's l2.ini. Rates (x500 / drop x1) do not do that. Re-apply the zip from /download inside System and open that l2.exe.
